Presbyopic Lens Exchange

PRELEX, otherwise known as presbyopic lens exchange, is a solution for aging eyes.

Presbyopia occurs when the eye’s natural lens loses its flexibility as we age. As the lens loses its flexibility, our eyes lose their natural ability to focus on near, intermediate and distant objects. With the onset of presbyopia, many patients must wear glasses for clear vision. And, if a patient is myopic (nearsighted) or hyperopic (farsighted), bifocals may become necessary.

PRELEX can correct presbyopia, so you can reduce or even eliminate your dependence on glasses or bifocals.

Unlike refractive vision correction procedures which change the shape of your cornea, PRELEX (presbyopic lens exchange) works on the lens inside of the eye to correct your vision. The natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), so vision correction is permanent and precise. PRELEX lenses are available in a variety of powers as well, so a wide range of correction needs may be treated. Furthermore, PRELEX restores the eye’s full range of vision and completely prevents cataracts. The actual procedure is fast and painless, and it is performed on an out-patient basis in our local surgical center. After the PRELEX procedure, most patients return to their normal activities on the following day.

Presbyopic patients who want to eliminate their need for corrective lenses may be candidates for PRELEX. Patients who are not considered candidates for LASIK due to certain vision conditions may also be candidates for PRELEX.

To be a candidate for PRELEX, one must generally:

  • be 50 years of age or older,
  • experience an increased need for reading glasses or bifocals,
  • experience diminishing vision quality,
  • have healthy eyes, and
  • be in overall good health.

To learn if you are a candidate, schedule an appointment with Carolina Eye Cataract & Laser. Dr. Nelson will perform a thorough examination of your eyes and advise you on the best method of vision correction for you.
