Multifocal Lens

Multifocal (Bifocal) Lens Implants

An Important Choice

Cataract Surgery

Multifocal IOL During cataract surgery the eye’s cloudy lens is replaced with a new one (Intraocular Lens – IOL). This has been the case since the 1970’s. Today there are several advancements in implanted lenses, each delivering a different performance profile based on how the lens is designed.

Clear Lens Exchange

Even if no cataract exists, the eyes natural lens can be replaced with an IntraOcular lens (IOL) to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and bifocals. There is an out-of-pocket charge for this procedure due to insurance non-coverage when the eyes natural lens is not cloudy.

Monofocal IntraOcular Lens (IOL)

A standard “monofocal” IOL is a lens that is designed to deliver improved vision at just one distance (usually far).

It doesn’t allow for good up close (near) vision and It doesn’t correct for astigmatism (irregular contour of the eye or cornea).

After surgery you will probably need to wear glasses for near, intermediate, and even for good distance vision if you have astigmatism.

Premium Multifocal (Bifocal) IOL

The opportunity for freedom from reading glasses and bifocals. Until recently (2005), life without reading glasses or bifocals wasn’t an option for most cataract patients. That option is now available.

The particular Multifocal IOL that is best for your eyes will be determined by your surgeon.

The ReSTOR Lens is the most popular Multifocal IOL implanted today due to its ability to produce good near and distance vision. With the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL, many people can read, drive and do other tasks without glasses. During the ReSTOR® IOL clinical studies, patients experienced lifestyle enhancement through quality vision, and greater freedom from reading glasses and bifocals.

In fact, according to the ReSTOR® clinical studies, four out of five patients with the ReSTOR® IOL reported never wearing glasses following cataract surgery in both eyes, compared to only 1 out of 10 patients with monofocal lenses. This is the highest level of freedom from glasses ever demonstrated in an IOL clinical trial.

Additionally, the ReSTOR® clinical studies indicated that nearly 94% of the study subjects were so satisfied with their new quality vision that they would have the ReSTOR® IOL implanted again. Read Testimonials >>

The Crystalens is the only IOL that “flexes” or “accommodates” using the eyes natural muscles to focus on subjects at various distances, delivering a continuous range of vision – particularly intermediate and far (near vision improvement is variable). Crystalens is the one and only FDA-approved “accommodating” lens available in the United States. Crystalens can reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses. More than twice the number of patients implanted with crystalens could see at all distances compared to a standard IOL. Crystalens Time Tested

  • The first and only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens
  • The only FDA approved intraocular lens that uses the natural focusing ability of the eye
  • The only FDA approved presbyopia correcting IOL for cataract patients that provides a single focal point throughout a continuous range of vision

Few patients with crystalens have experienced problems with glare, halos and night vision. crystalens focuses only one image to the back of the eye, unlike a multifocal lens that projects multiple images to enable far and near vision.

The effectiveness of crystalens® was proven in clinical trials:

  • Significantly more patients implanted with a crystalens (88.4%) could see better at all distances then patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%).
